1st day in Haiti.
Left my house in Norman, ok at 4am got to through customs in Haiti at 6pm. There was a problem with the 2nd plane that had me stranded in Dallas for the night and just before I was on my way out everything worked out and I boarded the next plane an hour later. So it took 14 hours to get here. 4.5 of those hours were spent actually flying. I remember maybe 6 of those hours. I was beat. Met an incredible man named Mark, who grew up in Haiti as a pastors kid, that helped me so much. He even helped me get my luggage and paid the guy to carry it out for me. Mark. You were sent straight from the Lord. You made the Haitian airport easy for me. Thank you.
By now I’ve only peed twice all day and had 3 sprite’s. My bladder is exploding. And no potty anywhere. I then took the 1 hour car ride to take me to the place I was staying that was only 2 miles away but due to the complete craziness of driving in Haiti things take a little longer. So while we were weaving, squeezing, swerving, and quite frankly just joining the chaos, I watched 3 men pee on the sidewalk (which are more like sidewhatevers because cars, motorcycles, bikes, and wheel barrels all use them) while I crossed my legs and held it. So peeing in public is normal.
I asked question nonstop the whole drive. Here’s what I’ve gathered so far. Yelling/honking is normal and sometimes friendly. Peeing in public is expected. Drivers in Haiti should be institutionalized. Nothing is what you think it is and plans don’t matter. This is Haiti.
So then we dropped my stuff off and ate some dinner, that was the first time I ate all day. It was so good. Then we went over to the livesays and pretty much just had some christmas time. It was great. Got back to the guesthouse and was warned about the tarantula that lives in the bathroom. Followed by “don’t worry they’re bite’s are like bee stings!” okay does anyone remember last summer when i got stung and my giant disgusting infected reaction that should have landed me in the ER (but refused to and went to the doctor a couple times instead)? Because I sure do and that is all I can think about when trying to relate to a tarantula bite.
Went to bed before 8. And I was so ready for it. But by 11 I was wide awake. So I didn’t get back to sleep til about 2. But then I slept like a baby. It was fun waking up in the morning to see all the mosquitoes squished in the net from the fan.
And thats the first impression of Haiti!
